Contact dermatitis

What is contact dermatitis?

Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition caused by contact with irritants or allergens. Symptoms include redness, itching and blistering in the affected areas.

What triggers contact dermatitis?

Contact dermatitis is triggered by direct contact with allergens such as nickel, fragrances and cosmetics, or irritants such as chemicals, soaps and cleaning products. Plants such as poison ivy can also cause a reaction.

Possible dermatological treatments

Treatment includes avoiding the trigger, applying topical corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, using moisturising creams and taking antihistamines to relieve itching. In severe cases, oral corticosteroids may be necessary.
