What is atopic dermatitis?
Atopic dermatitis, also known as atopic eczema, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by dry, itchy skin and eczema. It commonly affects children but can also occur in adults.
What triggers atopic dermatitis?
Atopic dermatitis is triggered by a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors such as allergens, stress, dry air and certain foods. A weakened immune system and an impaired skin barrier also play a role.
Possible dermatological treatments
Treatment includes moisturising creams, topical corticosteroids, calcineurin inhibitors, antihistamines to relieve itching and UV therapy. A consistent skincare routine and avoiding known triggers are also important.
